Biographical / Historical

Philosophy classes were offered at Brandeis University from its founding. In the 1948-49 academic year, the department offered eight different classes in the field of philosophy.

The majority of this collection concerns the life, beliefs, and philanthropy of Dr. Albert V. Danielson. Danielson was born in St. Thomas in 1893 of Danish parents and he died in Massachusetts in 1986 at the age of 93. Danielson was a successful businessman and realtor in addition to being a philanthropist and Protestant Christian. Danielson endowed a chair in Christian Thought at Brandeis University. He was a fellow of the university and he received an honorary doctorate from Brandeis in 1973.

This collection also includes photos of Harold Weisberg, chair and professor of the Philosophy Department at Brandeis University. There is also a letter written from Weisberg that is addressed to the writer and professor Saul Bellow at the University of Chicago.
