Scope and Contents

This collection includes Yiddish sheet music written for the Yiddish stage, Yiddish and Hebrew folksongs, and cantorial compositions. The majority of the collection was published in New York by Hebrew Publishing Co. between 1906 and 1917. Other publishers include J &J Kammen, Metro Music Co., and S. Schenker. Notable composers include: Abraham Goldfaden, J.M. Rumshisky, Henry A. Russotto, and Solomon Smulewitz. Materials in this collection were donated by various people over the years and grouped together for ease of use. See Acquisitions Note for more information.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by title.

Source of Acquisition

Fourteen pieces of sheet music were donated on behalf of the Harris family by Hanna Harris Johnson (Mrs. Merril Johnson) in February 1992. Approximately sixty eight pieces of sheet music were donate Eva Erdman in March 1995. Four pieces of sheet music were donated by Arlene Goodwin in February 2019. Processing Information

The Eva Erdman and the Harris family donations were combined to create an artificial collection circa 2007. The four pieces of sheet music donated by Arlene Goodwin were added to the collection in 2019.
