Scope and Contents The Department of Mediterranean Studies was originally an offshoot of the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies (NEJS). It was founded in 1958 by Professor Cyrus Gordon, who served as Charmain of the department until 1973. After Gordon's retirement the department struggled, including undergoing a two-year moratorium on graduate admissions.
