Summary: So valued was Leonardo Da Vinci’s Treatise on Painting that sometimes an artist would copy the entire book by hand when he could not afford a printed edition of the text. This copy dates from the early 1700s and is illustrated with very fine red chalk drawings and pen and ink sketches. Chapters 351 and 353 have been omitted by the writer.
Note: Small folio. Bound in undecorated vellum over paper boards ; manuscript title to spine ; housed in protective dark red cloth case. Written in a single hand. Includes 56 manuscript drawings, 23 executed in pen and ink in the text and 33 drawn with red chalk on china-paper and pasted into the manuscript at the appropriate places. Purchased by Bern Dibner from C.E. Rappaport, Rome, 1947. See letter from Rappaport to Dibner, housed with manuscript.
