Sub-series 4: News and Reviews includes all news stories, historical and biographical sketches, and articles for Kol Ishah, a section of Lilith designed for short news items. Kol Ishah takes its name from the halachic prohibition against women’s voices being heard in public, specifically in the context of singing. The column in Lilith is designed to present “news about Jewish women, in our own strong voices.” This sub-series also includes book and film reviews, as well as coverage of theatre, dance, and music performances. Materials are arranged by subject, then chronologically within each folder.
Of particular interest are notes and interviews with Israeli feminists in the early 1970s, written by Joanne Yaron in preparation for a story. Also of note is a rough transcript of Aviva Cantor’s interview with Dr. Phyllis Chesler, a multi-hour interview which was published in the Lilith’s Winter 1976-1977 issue. Within the cultural files, there are also materials on 1920s Yiddish film star Molly Picon, which are supported by images located in Series 5: Art and Design.
