    James Axelrod was a native of Boston. His parents immigrated from Russia to Boston and established a small woolen manufacturing concern. He founded the Airedale Worsted Mills, Inc. in 1938, After his father retired, James took over the family business and the Wamsutta Mills became a national enterprise. He accepted a bid to help build Brandeis University. He was one of the first seven trustees of the university.
