    Lenny Bruce was known for his outspoken and freestyle approach to comedy. He was also a social critic and satirist. In 1954, Bruce came into national attention with his conviction in an obscenity trial which was followed by a poshumous pardon. He paved the way for counterculture era comedians such as George Carlin and Richard Pryor.
